Welcome to Uardry’s farming division. Uardry, an approximately 35,000 hectare property in the Riverina in NSW is primarily known as a Merino stud station founded in 1864. Uardry started irrigating in 1890 and has been sustainably irrigating since.
Uardry’s farming division significantly expanded in 1989 with the purchase of the property of Arundel from where the farming division is based.
We crop up to 1,679 hectares of irrigation and produce many crops such as wheat, barley, canola, corn, rice, soybeans and other crops each year. We have permitted capacity to expand this area a further 470 hectares.
It is worth mentioning that at the April 2008 Uardry Reunion of Jackeroos, some having worked at Uardry in the 1940s, and former Uardry employees the most common accolade made of Uardry was the progress made on the irrigation. This event mustered about 80 Uardry alumni and their partners.
Many farming and environmental measures have been put in place to ensure the sustainability - both short and long term - of this property. The Black family, owners of Uardry since 1973, consider themselves to be stewards of the land, rather than owners. This environmental outlook limits the use of available arable land on Uardry to only about 5% of the total land area. These arable areas are rotated between crops to maximise output and minimise adverse environmental impact and disease risks. We try to incorporate as much organic matter as possible back into the soil as our rotations dictate.
